The Appoquinimink Virtual Academy at Lorewood Grove Elementary (Available 1st – 5th grade).
Appoquinimink School District will offer a 1st through 5th grade virtual-only program for families who would like to choose for their 1st through 5th grade students to receive virtual instruction online from home. Online instruction will include a combination of synchronized lessons delivered via Zoom, synchronized lessons delivered in a concurrent fashion whereby students will Zoom in through a camera in the classroom, and asynchronous independent work that students will access through a learning management system (LMS). The expectation is that students follow a regular schedule, on camera and engaged with their teachers and peers.
This program is applicable in the following two scenarios only:
- You are an out-of-district family who wants a virtual-only option in the Appoquinimink School District, which is a special program located at Lorewood Grove Elementary.
OR
- You are an in-district family who wants a choice option to Lorewood Grove Elementary and you are committing to a virtual-only program for the entire grade configuration.
Students will be accepted using a lottery model in blocks of 25 for 1st to 2nd grade and 32 for 3rd – 5th grade per grade level and thereafter. If fewer than 25 for 1st to 2nd grade and 32 for 3rd – 5th grade students apply in any given grade level, the program will not run at that grade level for that year. After students complete their elementary level grades (1st – 5th grade), families can apply for a seat in one of the Appoquinimink School District middle schools using the regular choice application model. Based on capacity, students may be accepted into a seat at one of the middle schools, which offer both in-person and virtual instruction using a camera-based concurrent model. Families should not assume that graduating from the Lorewood virtual-only program means access to one of the Appoquinimink School District middle schools for virtual or in-person learning.
Applications are open to all students enrolling in 1st through 5th grade. Parents who feel that their child may struggle with the independent nature of learning from home online should seriously weigh the pros and cons of applying to a virtual-only program. Families should also be aware of the technology needs from home, including reliable internet connectivity each day. The school district will provide student devices, but other technology needs may be required. Out-of-district students who struggle with online learning will not be offered an opportunity to access in-person learning at Lorewood Grove Elementary unless a seat is available.
