Welcome to the start of something truly special!

We are excited that you have chosen the Colonial School District for your child’s educational experience. The Colonial School District has a long-standing tradition of serving the community, providing students with the knowledge and skills for success beyond formal schooling as well as instilling the positive characteristics and traits of productive citizens.

Located in the heart of New Castle County, Colonial serves approximately 10,000 students and has eight elementary schools, three middle schools, one high school and two special needs schools. We are committed to continuous parent and community engagement as part of the new look and values of the district. We provide a variety of avenues for the Colonial community to receive regular updates and to be involved in the exciting activities and programs in the Colonial School District.

We work hard to combine many great Colonial traditions of the past with innovative programming to provide comprehensive 21st century educational opportunities for all students. Systemic change takes time, but with the continued support of a committed and focused staff, outstanding students, and an engaged community, the Colonial School District will undoubtedly achieve its goals.

Our mission is to maintain and expand a more rigorous teaching and learning environment that centers on providing all students with the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century. This includes collaborating with our local business community, institutions of higher education, and engaging the community as a whole as we strive to ensure an education that provides students with a sense of belonging while helping them to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

The Colonial School District offers “choice programs” within our schools.

Language Immersion: Language Immersion offers a robust bilingual experience for young learners at the point in their development that is perfect for learning a new language.  More than forty years of research consistently documents the power of immersion education to help students attain high levels of world language proficiency.  No other type of instruction, short of living in a non-English-speaking environment, is as successful.  Young children especially thrive in this type of learning environment where learning new languages comes as naturally as learning their first one.  World Language Immersion students follow the same standards-based curriculum in all content areas that non-immersion students follow in any other Colonial School District elementary, middle and, beginning 2024-2025 school year, high school classrooms.

The Colonial School District offers Spanish Immersion Programs to begin within two our of Elementary Schools. School Choice in the Language Immersion Programs begins in Kindergarten; however, there may be limited availability in Grade 1.  The Spanish Immersion Program is located at Kathleen H. Wilbur and Pleasantville Elementary Schools.  Only students applying through the School Choice Program will be considered, regardless of their resident school.

If you are interested in your incoming Kindergartener joining the Spanish Immersion Program, please select Kathleen H. Wilbur and/or Pleasantville Elementary Schools as the School Choice and then select Spanish Immersion as the Program Choice.

Colonial School District is dedicated to our students, staff, families and community! We look forward to serving you!

We appreciate your interest in our district and hope to have your child join our growing student body! Welcome to Colonial!
