Welcome to the Colonial School District!
Where tradition meets innovation, and every child's potential shines.
Welcome to the start of something truly special! We're thrilled that you've chosen the Colonial School District for your child's educational journey.
For generations, Colonial has proudly served the heart of New Castle County, empowering students with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in life - both in and beyond the classroom. With eight elementary schools, three middle schools, one high school, and two special needs schools, we're home to nearly 10,000 students who are supported, inspired, and encouraged to dream big every day. At Colonial, learning extends far beyond textbooks. We are a community of learners and leaders - families, educators, and local partners working together to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for every student. Through open communication, innovative programs, and strong community partnerships, we're building a brighter future . . . one student at a time.
Our Commitment
We're dedicated to providing a 21st-century education that helps every student thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our mission is to ensure that all students feel a sense of belonging while gaining the skills and confidence to lead, create, and succeed in an ever-changing world.
Choice Programs: Language Immersion
Give your child the gift of bilingualism through Colonial School District’s Spanish Language Immersion Program! Our program offers students the opportunity to develop Spanish language proficiency while building valuable skills for lifelong learning.
- Kathleen H. Wilbur School: Incoming Kindergarten students
- Gunning Bedford Middle School: Incoming 6th-grade students currently enrolled in an fully accredited 5th grade Spanish Immersion Program
- William Penn High School: Incoming 9th-grade students currently enrolled in an fully accredited 8th grade Spanish Immersion Program
Discover the benefits of bilingualism and explore the opportunities our Spanish Language Immersion Program offers!
Designed for young learners at the perfect stage for language development, our Immersion Program provides a rich, bilingual learning experience, where students learn academic content in both English and Spanish. Decades of research show that immersion students achieve high levels of language proficiency while meeting or exceeding academic standards in all subjects.
- Program begins in Kindergarten, with very limited availability in Grade 1.
- Families interested in Spanish Immersion should select Kathleen H. Wilbur Elementary School, Gunning Bedford Middle School or William Penn High School as their School Choice, then choose Spanish Immersion as the Program Option.
Specialized Programming
Specialized programming for students with complex learning needs is available across Colonial School District. These services are no longer limited to one school location, Southern Elementary, and will be provided at a student's designated feeder school or at a nearby designated “HUB school” that offers the appropriate programming and support. Programming is available at five Colonial schools: Eisenberg Elementary, New Castle Elementary, Pleasantville Elementary, Southern Elementary, and Wilbur Elementary.
Decisions regarding specialized programming and placement are made by each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, based on the student's unique needs. Placement in specialized programming is not determined through the school choice process alone.
Transportation: Students attending their designated feeder school or an assigned HUB school based on their IEP needs will receive district-provided transportation. Families who elect to attend a school through the school choice process are responsible for transportation to and from that school.
Join the Colonial Family
At Colonial, we're more than a school district - we're a family! Our students, staff, and families work together to celebrate traditions, embrace innovation, and ensure every learner is seen, heard, and supported. We can't wait to welcome your family to our community and watch your child grow, learn, and thrive.
